Honolulu | Ono Hawaiian Foods

Had to bring Pierre to Ono’s for his first taste of Hawaiian food ^_^ My family prefers Helena’s (and

The combination plate with a taste of everything is the most popular menu items. But if know you exactly what you want, go a la carte. We got Pierre the laulau and kalua pig combo (bottom right), and I went a la carte with chicken long rice and pork laulau.

First, sweet Maui onions for the table. You can eat this with everything.

And then lomilomi salmon…

Here’s the laulau! They were sold out of chicken laulau, so everyone got pork laulau. Comes with rice or poi. I like poi (especially in

Nice and fatty. That’s the pork you’re looking at. Laulau is pork with salt butterfish wrapped in luau leaves. It’s then wrapped in an outer layer of ti leaves and steamed. Don’t eat the ti leaves, but definitely eat the luau leaves…that’s the best part. Reid has a great recipe for laulau here.

This is the kalua pig….

…I like it with chili pepper sauce and rice.

My sister ordered tripe stew. A little too funky for me, but she’s crazy about tripe.

Chicken long rice – my favorite Hawaiian dish. The Punahou cafeteria served this for lunch often and I remember getting second and even third servings on those days. We even <a href="http://static.squarespace.com/static/51895797e4b07dc9727307ce/518957d3e4b04dec96da1667/5189584fe4b04dec96da275b/1282970749000/#img like to add ginger and shitake mushrooms.

Pipikaula (dried beef) for nibbling…

…and haupia (a cross between coconut pudding and jelly) for dessert.

No line when we arrived at 5:30pm…but there were crowds by the time we left at 6:30. Best to go for lunch, as many items sell out before dinner ^_^
